What Is Anand Karaj?
Anand Karaj, meaning blissful union in Punjabi, is the Sikh marriage ceremony. It was introduced by Guru Amar Das Ji and formalised by Guru Ram Das Ji. The ceremony consists of four Laavan, or circles around the Guru Granth Sahib, each accompanied by a verse from Gurbani. Each Laav represents a spiritual stage of the couple’s journey together.
What Happens During the Anand Karaj Ceremony?
The ceremony begins with Ardas, a prayer offered to Waheguru. The couple and their parents sit before the Guru Granth Sahib. The Granthi reads from Gurbani and explains the meaning of the Laavan. The couple then walks around the Guru Granth Sahib four times, once for each Laav. After the four Laavan are complete, Anand Sahib is recited and Ardas is offered to close the ceremony.
How Long Does an Anand Karaj Take?
The Anand Karaj ceremony itself typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Including the arrival, Ardas, and Deg, most ceremonies last between one and two hours.
What Should Guests Wear to an Anand Karaj?
All guests are asked to cover their heads before entering the Darbar Sahib. Women typically cover their heads with a dupatta or scarf. Men cover their heads with a patka, turban, or handkerchief. Shoes must be removed before entering. Modest clothing is recommended. Bright colours are welcome.
Can Non-Sikhs Attend an Anand Karaj?
Yes. Non-Sikh guests are welcome at an Anand Karaj. The requirements are to cover your head, remove your shoes, and follow the same protocols as everyone else in the Gurdwara. You do not need to be Sikh to attend.
